After a death in Broward County
- The legal next of kin (as defined by Florida Statute 497.005(39)) contacts a funeral home or crematorium, makes final arrangements and signs a written release letting the Medical Examiner's Office release the body.
- In most cases the body can be released right after the examination, typically the afternoon after death; most are released 24 to 48 hours after death to the funeral home chosen by the next of kin.
- Viewing of remains at the District 17 Medical Examiner's Office is prohibited.
- Death certificates come from the Office of Vital Statistics or the funeral home, not the Medical Examiner.
The medical examiner's role before a cremation
- The office reviews and approves all cremation requests in Broward County to make sure no foul play occurred.
- The county runs an indigent cremation program (its 2026 indigent cremation application).
- Florida law (F.S. 406.11(1)(c)) puts every body that is to be cremated under the district medical examiner's review.
