After a death in DeKalb County
- The office conducts the autopsy within 24 to 48 hours. Meanwhile the legal next of kin should choose a funeral home or crematorium and sign a written release giving the Medical Examiner's Office permission to release the body.
- After the exam, the body is released to the family's chosen funeral home or crematorium. Families may choose any provider.
- In-person viewings take place at the funeral home. Death certificates come from Vital Records, not the office.
The medical examiner's role before a cremation
- In Georgia, for a death reportable to the coroner or medical examiner, the disposition permit for cremation is issued (only in the county of death) after the county coroner or medical examiner approves.
Georgia cremation rules, including when a medical examiner must review a cremation
