After a death in Fulton County

  • As soon as possible, select a funeral home for burial or cremation and tell the funeral director your loved one is under the Medical Examiner's jurisdiction. The funeral director has the office's release form for the next of kin to sign.
  • The office does not have a viewing facility; arrange viewing with the funeral home before burial or cremation.
  • The office does not recommend funeral homes and will contact the family when the loved one is ready for final arrangements.
  • If the family cannot pay for burial, Fulton County provides indigent burial through the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS Indigent Burial, 404-505-3767).

The medical examiner's role before a cremation

  • In Georgia, for a death reportable to the coroner or medical examiner, the disposition permit for cremation is issued (only in the county of death) after the county coroner or medical examiner approves.
