After a death in Gwinnett County
- The office will not let anyone take custody of the body until it receives an Authorization to Release Remains form hand-signed by the legal next of kin (English and Spanish versions). The form is faxed to 678.442.3155 or emailed.
- Funeral home or cremation society staff collect the next of kin's information and signature and send the completed form for verification before release.
The medical examiner's role before a cremation
- When a physician wrongly refuses to sign a death certificate for a death the Medical Examiner declined, the body cannot be buried or cremated until it is signed.
- In Georgia, for a death reportable to the coroner or medical examiner, the disposition permit for cremation is issued (only in the county of death) after the county coroner or medical examiner approves.
