After a death in Johnson County
- The legal next of kin should call the Medical Examiner's Office as soon as they choose a funeral home; the office works directly with the funeral home on transport after the exam.
- There is no charge for autopsies by the office. Belongings are inventoried and released to the funeral home with the body, unless held as evidence.
- Families arrange viewing through the funeral home after the autopsy. Death certificates come from the funeral home or state vital records, not the office.
The medical examiner's role before a cremation
- Kansas requires a coroner's permit to cremate for every death that occurred in Kansas before the body may be cremated (K.S.A. 65-2426a).
- The office takes cremation permit requests for Missouri deaths through an online form.
