After a death in Knox County
- If your loved one becomes a Medical Examiner case, the Medical Examiner signs the death certificate. Arrange with a funeral home or crematorium of your choice (or give other burial instructions); the funeral home or crematorium arranges pickup once the examination is done.
- Viewing is not permitted at the facility. Personal belongings go with the body to the funeral home or crematorium unless part of an investigation.
- Tennessee law does not require a funeral home for burial (check local rules); the office can help families who want to donate a body for education or research.
The medical examiner's role before a cremation
- Under Tennessee law the county medical examiner must be notified of any and all cremations.
- Funeral homes request a cremation permit by faxing the Cremation Request Form to 865-215-8020.
- Fee. $45 processing fee for all cremation permits
Tennessee cremation rules, including when a medical examiner must review a cremation
Autopsy and investigation reports
- The final autopsy report may take three to six months. Call 865-215-8000 during business hours to check status; staff walk families through getting the final report (for deaths in Knox, Anderson and Blount counties).
