After a death in Miami-Dade County
- Indigent Cremation Services provide final disposition when a family cannot afford a private funeral and the death occurred in Miami-Dade County (the person need not be a resident). No embalming, viewing or memorial services are provided.
- Families who want to claim the remains must show proof of fee payment; the Medical Examiner may take 8 or more weeks to fully process a case.
- Funeral directors must ask the certifying physician about any non-natural cause before final disposition, and anyone who knows of possible trauma must report it to the medical examiner.
The medical examiner's role before a cremation
- Indigent Cremation Services fees: $475.00 for families unable to show current government assistance; $150.00 for families that show it (Food Stamps, Medicaid, TANF or SSI); $65.00 administrative fee.
- Florida law (F.S. 406.11(1)(c)) puts every body that is to be cremated under the district medical examiner's review.
