After a death in Orange County
- The legal next of kin contacts a funeral home or crematorium, makes final arrangements, and signs a written release letting the Medical Examiner's Office release the body; the office posts a Release Document for families to give the funeral home.
- Even when the cause of death is pending, most bodies are released within 24 to 48 hours of examination to the family's chosen funeral home.
- Death certificates come from Vital Statistics or the funeral home, not the Medical Examiner.
The medical examiner's role before a cremation
- The crematorium, funeral home or cremation facility flags the electronic death certificate for cremation approval in the state registration system (or faxes a paper certificate to (321) 321-8174). A medical examiner reviews it and approves it or gathers more information; some requests become cases under the office's jurisdiction.
- Facilities are invoiced monthly for the previous month's cremation approvals.
- Florida law (F.S. 406.11(1)(c)) puts every body that is to be cremated under the district medical examiner's review.
- Fee. $60.00 for each cremation approval (effective October 1, 2025)
