After a death in Pulaski County

  • Choosing a funeral home or cremation service is one of the family's first decisions; once chosen, the provider handles details such as moving the body, even out of state.
  • No state, city or county program helps pay this final expense; in some homicide cases the Arkansas Crime Victims Reparations Program may help.
  • The funeral home or cremation service starts, certifies and records the death certificate.
  • Property removed by the coroner is released only to the legal next of kin during business hours; medications and ID documents are kept. The office recommends viewing at the funeral home.

The coroner's role before a cremation

  • When a death comes under the coroner's or medical examiner's authority, the crematory may not receive the body until the coroner of the county of death or the medical examiner authorizes cremation (17 CAR 30-208).

Autopsy and investigation reports

  • Coroner's reports may be released to family members and insurance agencies on request (homicide and undetermined cases need the prosecuting attorney's authorization or a court order). Family members email or mail a written request with the decedent's name, birth and death dates, and their own name, address and phone.
