After a death in Tarrant County

  • Release of the body must be authorized in writing by the nearest legal next of kin (or their named designee) on the office's Authorization to Release Remains form; funeral home staff can deliver it, or it can be faxed or brought in person.
  • Funeral home releases happen only on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., not on weekends or holidays.
  • If the family objects to an autopsy on religious, cultural or other grounds, the nearest legal next of kin can file an Autopsy Waiver Form before the examination begins.

The medical examiner's role before a cremation

  • Texas law (Code of Criminal Procedure 49.25, Sec. 10) requires a cremation certificate from the medical examiner before cremation. The funeral home requests the permit by email or fax with a copy of the death certificate worksheet.
  • The office issues cremation permits for deaths in Tarrant, Denton, Parker and Johnson counties.
