After a death in Tulsa County

  • The family selects a funeral home or crematory and tells the office which one, so it can be called as soon as the body is ready for release; the funeral director handles the remaining details.
  • The office cannot recommend a funeral home. There is no viewing at the office; the body may be viewed at the funeral home shortly after it arrives there.
  • Except for evidence, items brought in with the body are released to the funeral home with the body. If the office performs the autopsy, there is no charge to the family.

The medical examiner's role before a cremation

  • Oklahoma law lists deaths of persons whose bodies are to be cremated among the deaths reported to and investigated by the medical examiner system, and the Board of Medicolegal Investigations charges a fee for each permit for cremations in the state.
  • Fee. $200.00 per cremation permit; $25.00 late fee for permits over 30 days (OAC 445:10)
