Few funeral homes post their price list online, except in California
66 of 805 funeral home websites we could fully read in 8 states post their General Price List: 8.2%. In California, the one state in this study whose law covers funeral home websites, 144 of 323 do: 44.6%. That is about 5 times the rate.
Published . Websites read October 26, 2026 (California) and October 31, 2026 (the other 8 states). Figures are counts from those reads and have not been edited.
What we found
Every funeral home must hand you an itemized General Price List when you ask about arrangements in person, under the federal Funeral Rule. Nothing in that rule makes a funeral home put the list on its website. So we checked how many do. A website counts as posting when its General Price List is on the home page or one of up to three price-list links the home page shows.
| Where | Websites we could fully read | Post a price list | Share | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arkansas | 90 | 3 | 3.3% | 1.1% to 9.3% |
| Florida | 176 | 24 | 13.6% | 9.3% to 19.5% |
| Georgia | 99 | 3 | 3.0% | 1.0% to 8.5% |
| Kansas | 49 | 6 | 12.2% | 5.7% to 24.2% |
| Missouri | 83 | 4 | 4.8% | 1.9% to 11.7% |
| Oklahoma | 72 | 5 | 6.9% | 3.0% to 15.2% |
| Tennessee | 88 | 5 | 5.7% | 2.5% to 12.6% |
| Texas | 150 | 16 | 10.7% | 6.7% to 16.6% |
| All 8 states | 805 | 66 | 8.2% | 6.5% to 10.3% |
| California | 323 | 144 | 44.6% | 39.3% to 50.0% |
Across the 8 states the share runs from 3.0% in Georgia to 13.6% in Florida. A website that serves several of our listings in different states counts once in the total and once in each of those states. The 95% range shows how far the share could move by chance; small states have wide ranges.
Why California is different
California's Business and Professions Code section 7685 gives a funeral establishment with a website two choices. It can post the list of goods and services its General Price List must carry, with a statement that the list is available on request. Or it can link the General Price List itself from its home page. Close to half of the California websites we could read link the list itself. The first choice puts no prices online, so California's share would be higher still if every home chose the second. (Cemetery and Funeral Bureau law book, 2023 edition.)
Why it matters
When a price list is not online, the only way to compare funeral homes is to call each one and ask. The Funeral Rule says a home must give prices over the phone when asked, but that takes a call per home, often in the days right after a death. Where lists are posted, a family can see the basic services fee, direct cremation and direct burial side by side before choosing. CremationClear shows the figures from every posted list we can read on its funeral prices page.
Funeral homes that post their price list
The 47 price lists we found in the 8 states, by the listing they belong to. A funeral home missing here may post its list somewhere our read could not reach; write to us and we will add it.
Method
- Who: every website of the 1,531 funeral businesses CremationClear lists in 8 states (1,360 distinct websites), and every website of a California licensed funeral establishment that its Google profile confirms by street number and ZIP (864 websites).
- How: one automated read per website. We followed each site's rules for automated readers, waited 2 seconds between requests to a site, and never worked around a refusal.
- Pages read: the home page, plus up to three links on it that point to prices or a price list. A PDF linked from a price page was followed.
- What counts as a General Price List: a document that prints the Funeral Rule's required wording, or one titled General Price List that prices embalming or the basic services fee. A page of package prices alone does not count.
- Left out: 555 websites in the 8 states and 541 in California that we could not read. The reasons were a security check page (246), a price-list link was refused (125), the site asks AI readers to stay out (104), the site asks automated readers to stay out (44) and the page did not load (36) in the 8 states. Large chains that refuse automated reads are under-counted, so read the shares as the shares of readable websites, not of all funeral homes.
- A floor: a price list kept deeper in a site, behind a form, or posted after our read counts as not found. A funeral home that tells us where its list is gets added at the next edition.
